My first time playing final fantasy....help?

So this is my first time ever playing Final Fantasy. I'm playing ff8 on my ps1. My gfs are learning refining abilities and I know I can refine things such as red fang into 20 firagas but does it work the other way around? Like can I refine 20 firagas into a red fang? Sorry if this seems like a dumb question to some of you but thanks for your help!!!!!
