How to search images(jpeg) , vidoes(mpeg) ,doc , txt ,ppt , excel and pdf files from a database ?

Hello . I m building a software called Knowledge Management System . This software is supposed allow users to upload files of above type on the server and retrieve them when needed . I m facing problems in the retrieving part . Can u suggest some algorithms . We r using J2EE to build the project .
