Why are conservatives unwilling to liberate the country?

conservatives say that that the united states was founded on god but wasn't this country also founded on slavery, so should we still have slaves. I do not see how religion has a place in the government or why it is needed in it. We all have different beliefs and it is wrong to make some live by some other person's beliefs
