What kind of behavior is this...?

I saw a doentary on National Geographic TV, in which a male cobra snake comes across a female cobra and makes advances for mating, but kills female cobra, later on they found that female cobra was already pregnant. Can you explain as to why male cobra killed female cobra instead mating..?
